White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt firmly rebutted a reporter’s assertions, which she deemed ‘frankly ridiculous,’ regarding President Trump’s alleged use of his office for personal financial benefit. In her response, Leavitt exhibited a significant level of loyalty to the Trump Administration, emphasizing that ethics have been prioritized under its leadership.
During a press briefing at the White House on May 9, 2025, Leavitt offered insights regarding the president’s imminent trip to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates commencing on Monday, May 12. This prompted a reporter to inquire whether President Trump intended to engage with individuals associated with his businesses or conduct any commercial activities during the visit, a question that Leavitt firmly indicated was inappropriate.
In the press briefing, Leavitt articulated that the main objective of the trip was to underscore President Trump’s vision for a proud, prosperous, and successful Middle East, characterized by cooperative relationships between the United States and Middle Eastern nations, and the defeat of extremism in favor of commerce and cultural exchanges. She further stated, ‘This trip ultimately underscores our position on the verge of a golden age for both America and the Middle East, united by a common vision of stability, opportunity, and mutual respect.’
During the briefing, when Leavitt was inquired about the potential participation of President Trump’s family in his Middle East visit, she responded, “I am not currently monitoring the involvement of family members, but naturally, the First Family is invited to accompany us.” She further expressed, “I would hope they would join us, as they are wonderful individuals and a pleasure to be with.”
Subsequently, a journalist inquired if President Trump’s visit was related to his private business interests, to which the press secretary responded, ‘To the best of my knowledge, no. Allow me to address the underlying premise of your question that both of you have brought up.’ Leavitt further stated, ‘I find it quite absurd that anyone present would imply that President Trump is acting for his personal gain.’
In her ongoing defense of the president, Leavitt stated, “He abandoned a life of luxury and a thriving real estate empire to serve the public, not just once, but on two occasions.” She further remarked, “The American electorate chose to re-elect him to this White House because they believe he prioritizes the best interests of our nation and the American people.”
Leavitt, without hesitation, emphasized the hypocrisy in criticizing President Trump, stating, ‘This is a president who has genuinely incurred financial losses during his tenure.’ She further remarked, ‘I do not recall similar inquiries being directed at my predecessor, a career politician who evidently benefited financially from his position. President Trump does not engage in such practices, and this administration adheres to the highest ethical standards.’
Additionally, concerning the objective of President Trump’s trip to the Middle East, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles informed the New York Post on April 29, “The primary focus is on business agreements and investments in the United States from all three nations,” clarifying that the president is not seeking personal financial benefits. Wiles further stated, “These investments are comprehensive and quite significant.”
